AIRE – Register of Italians resident abroad

What is A.I.R.E. And who has to sign up?

The Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (A.I.R.E.) was established with law 27 October 1988, n. 470 and contains the data of Italian citizens residing abroad for a period exceeding twelve months.

It is managed by the Municipalities on the basis of data and information from consular representations abroad.
Registration with the A.I.R.E. it is a right-duty of the citizen and constitutes the prerequisite for using a series of services provided to fellow countrymen, as well as for exercising important rights, such as for example:

the possibility of voting for general elections and referendums by correspondence in the country of residence, and for the election of Italian representatives to the European Parliament in the polling stations set up by the diplomatic-consular network in countries belonging to the EU;
the possibility of obtaining the issue or renewal of identity and travel documents, as well as certifications;
the possibility of renewing the driving licence.

Must register with A.I.R.E.:

– citizens who transfer their residence abroad for periods longer than 12 months;
– citizens who already reside there, both because they were born abroad and for the subsequent acquisition of Italian citizenship in any capacity.

The following do not have to register with A.I.R.E.:

– people who go abroad for a period of less than one year;
– seasonal workers;
– permanent employees of the State serving abroad, who are notified pursuant to the Vienna Conventions on diplomatic relations and consular relations of 1961 and 1963 respectively.

Registration with the A.I.R.E. must be carried out within 90 days of the transfer of residence and involves the simultaneous cancellation from the Resident Population Registry (A.P.R.) of the Municipality of origin.
