Repatriation of remains or ashes

The Consulate General offers assistance and advice in the event of the repatriation of remains or ashes. To obtain authorization to bring the body or ashes of a deceased relative into Italy within this consular jurisdiction, the American funeral home concerned must send the following documentation to this Consulate General:

  1. two death certificates with apostille and translation;
  2. a) in the case of deceased: apostilled statement and translation from the City/County Health Department stating that the deceased did not die of a contagious disease;
    b) in the case of ashes: certificate of cremation with apostille and translation;
  3. a declaration from the funeral home agency notarized by the Notary Public certifying compliance with the rules of the Italian Mortuary Police Regulations (use facsimile A for corpses and facsimile B for ashes. Both forms are at the bottom of this page);
  4. declaration with the data relating to the deceased (facsimile C at the bottom of the page), completed on the letterhead of the funeral home agency;
  5. Italian passport (which will be canceled and returned at the end of the procedure), or notarized photocopy of the foreign passport;
  6. pre-stamped envelope for the return of the documentation;

The total consular fees for the repatriation of body or ashes are shown in the extract of the Consular Table updated quarterly.

Upon receipt of the documentation, the Consulate General will request the necessary authorization from the competent Italian municipality for the introduction of the body or ashes into Italy. As soon as the authorization is received, the Consulate General will contact the funeral home to establish when to affix the seal on the casket or urn and deliver all the necessary documentation.

Warning: after arrival in Italy at the airport or port of first landing, the body and ashes must be transported to the final destination by land. Air transport within the Italian territory is not permitted.
