COLUMBUS DAY CELEBRATIONS IN TEXAS AND LOUISIANA

The celebration for Columbus Day, which commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus and represents the strong ties that bind Italy and the United States, was celebrated in this region with public events in the cities of San Antonio (TX), Dallas (TX) and Baton Rouge (LA).

The Italian Club of Dallas organized a Gala Soiree, attended by Consul General Fabrizio Nava and the President of Comites (Committee of Italians abroad) Vincenzo Arcobelli. San Antonio hosted the traditional procession from the Church of San Francesco di Paola to Columbus Square, where a wreath of flowers was placed at the feet of the Christopher Columbus statue and the Columbus Week Proclamation by Mayor Castro was read. The celebrations in San Antonio will continue on October 14 with a Spaghetti Dinner and a vintage car exhibit. The American Italian Federation of the South East organized in Baton Rouge, Capital of the State of Louisiana, a celebration attended by over a thousand participants. The ceremony, held under the patronage of the Mayor of Baton Rouge, was hosted at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino and Hotel.

The celebrations continued on the weekend of October 12/14, with the 2013 edition of Houston's Italian Festival organized by the Italian Communities Cultural Center in the grounds of the University of St. Thomas.
