Italian-American excellence in the fight against COVID -19. Scientific and technological collaboration between the USA and Italy paves the way to the future

April 17, 2020. On April 15, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation celebrated the day of Italian research in the world. For over 30 years, thanks also to the bilateral cooperation Agreement, scientific and technological research and collaboration projects between Italian and American institutes have allowed revolutionary discoveries and constitute a spearhead on the international scene.The Embassy monitors and maps the main scientific collaborations, conveys proposals for collaboration to the Italian Health Authorities and supports the work of Italian researchers who stand out in this sector.

More than 30 universities, research centers and companies in the USA cooperate with their Italian counterparts and make a fundamental contributions in the fight against Covid-19. The areas of cooperation range from molecular to serological tests to the testing of new drugs and therapies; from vaccine development to technological solutions such as the use of Big Data and artificial intelligence, from the exchange of information, to scientific publications.

The Embassy, ​​in collaboration with ISSNAF, a foundation that brings together over 4000 Italian researchers and scientists in the USA, has launched a fund raising campaign to benefit the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute in Rome, the Sacco Hospital in Milan and the Hospital Cotugno of Naples.

The Italian and American best work side by side to overcome the Covid-19 emergency and, above all, to pave the way for the future, in order to build increasingly safe and resilient societies. They took up the challenge of an unprecedented crisis which will have profound impacts on our societies and which has demonstrated the importance of international collaboration.
