Drawing Stories. The Evolution of the Itlaian Language in Comics | 19-25 October 2020

Drawing Stories, the evolution of Italian Language in Comics is the digital exhibition organized by the Cultural Institutes of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC and Toronto, in collaboration with Romics, International Comics, Animation, Cinema and Game Festival. The exhibition opening will be on the 19th of October 2020. The event is part of the 20th edition of the Week of the Italian Language in the World promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (19-25 October 2020), which will have as title Italian Between Word and Image: Graffiti, Illustrations, Comic Books.

The itinerary focuses on the evolution of language in comics, from the great masters to emerging authors. A virtual journey to discover the profound changes, particularly in narrative terms, that the “ninth art” has experienced in recent years, starting with the role of the screenwriter. The exhibition, which centers around the works of Tito Faraci (writer, screenwriter for Disney, Astorina, Sergio Bonelli Editore, and editorial curator for Feltrinelli Comics) and interactions with multiple designers and notable figures, will present 30 tables with authors from the most important Italian publishing houses, including Giorgio Cavazzano, Silvia Ziche, Bruno Brindisi, Marco Gervasio, Enrique Breccia, Ivo Milazzo, Giuseppe Palumbo, Sio, Francesco Ripoli and Lorenzo Pastrovicchio.

The theme of this cultural study, in addition to offering international scope and "country branding" linked to comics, is intended to be a reflection on the mutations of narrative rhythms dictated both by the impact of new media and by the ever-rising popularity of the graphic novel.

To accompany the Virtual Exhibition, a series of meetings centered around the changes taking place in iconic characters from Italian and international comics to graphic novels: starring the innovative and international impact of Disney Italia comic production; graphic novels, their narrative impact, the introduction of new narrative languages and rhythms, and a journey behind the scenes of comic books that highlights Diabolik as the protagonist in a dialogue on how to get to that extraordinary alchemy between history and image. Tito Faraci, Alex Bertani, Barbara Baldi, Sergio Brancato, Igort, Mario Gomboli, Giuseppe Palumbo and other Italian authors will take part in the presentations.

The digital exhibition and live meetings will be available free of charge (in both Italian and English) on the site, as well as the sites from the participating cultural and diplomatic offices, from 19 October to 15 November 2020.

Romics has created a virtual experience exhibition, allowing the public to enjoy the exhibition remotely, actively involving fans and professionals in the sector through a program that is rich in multimedia content and in-depth webinars.
