{"id":280,"date":"2023-04-03T19:30:58","date_gmt":"2023-04-04T00:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T16:14:52","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T21:14:52","slug":"cittadinanza","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decree-law of March 28, 2025, no. 36, has been converted with amendments into\u00a0<strong>law no. 74<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>May 23, 2025<\/strong>, effective from May 24, 2025.<br \/>\nThe conversion law reforms law\u00a0<strong>no. 91 of February 5, 1992<\/strong>, the full updated text of which is available at the following\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.normattiva.it\/uri-res\/N2Ls?urn:nir:stato:legge:1992-02-05;91!vig=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore, based on the new law, the following individuals are recognized as Italian citizens by jure sanguinis (from birth):<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The applicant born in Italy on any date.<\/li>\n<li>The applicant who holds exclusively Italian citizenship,\u00a0<strong>meaning they do not and cannot hold any other citizenship.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The applicant who falls\u00a0<strong>under one of the cases<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>a), a-bis), b), c), and d) of Article 3-bis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can apply for Italian citizenship:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/cittadinanza-per-discendenza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By descent (iure sanguinis)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/en\/?page_id=861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By marriage or civil union<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/reacquirement-of-italian-citizenship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By reacquisition<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Please carefully check the section that is relevant to your case to read the specific legal requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applications for\u00a0<strong><em>citizenship by descent<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0must be submitted in the applicant\u2019s country of residence, specifically at the Italian Consulate or Embassy responsible for that jurisdiction. If the applicant resides in Italy, they should contact their C<em>omune<\/em>\u00a0in Italy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Consulate General of Italy in Houston has jurisdiction over the following US States:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>TEXAS<\/li>\n<li>LOUISIANA<\/li>\n<li>OKLAOMA<\/li>\n<li>ARKANSAS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Italian parents of minor children, who may be recognized as Italian citizens, must request that their child\u2019s birth be registered in Italy by following the procedure outlined on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/nascita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to register a birth<\/a> and NOT by referring to the Citizenship section of the website, which only applies to adults.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Informativa-EN-Cittadinanza.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Information on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data for the purpose of recognizing Italian citizenship iure sanguinis or its acquisition by naturalization (articles 5 and 7, as well as article 9, paragraph 1, letter c, and paragraph 2 of the law n. 91\/1992).
