This\u00a0process is similar to\u00a0applying for a marriage license in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>WEDDING CEREMONIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Civil ceremonies are performed by the Ufficiale di Stato Civile or their proxy.<br \/>\nReligious ceremonies, performed by Roman Catholic clergy, do not require a separate civil ceremony. Once the ceremony has been performed, the clergy will\u00a0register the marriage\u00a0with the local vital records\u00a0office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>REQUIRED DOCUMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. citizens must submit the following documents\u00a0to the Ufficiale di Stato Civile when\u00a0applying for\u00a0a declaration of intent to marry in Italy:<br \/>\n1. US passports (U.S. Armed Forces personnel must submit military ID);<br \/>\n2. Certified long form copy of birth certificates for the bride and groom, duly legalized with the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/apostille-traduzione-e-legalizzazione-dei-documenti\/apostille\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apostille<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/apostille-traduzione-e-legalizzazione-dei-documenti\/traduttori\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-focus-mouse=\"false\"><strong>Translated into Italian<\/strong><\/a>;<br \/>\n3. Evidence of termination of any previous marriage (final divorce or annulment decrees or death certificates);<br \/>\n4. For anyone under the age of 18, the authorization from the Minor Court is needed;<br \/>\n5. Affidavit from U.S. legal authority certifying there are no impediments to the marriage under U.S. law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since there is no federal registry of marriages in the United States, requirement n. 5\u00a0is fulfilled by providing\u00a0<strong>BOTH<\/strong>\u00a0the following affidavits:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>a)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Affidavit signed before a U.S. Consular Officer in Italy<\/strong>, in which applicants declare that there are no impediments to their marriage under U.S. law.\u00a0 In this case\u00a0applicants must contact the U.S. Embassy\/Consulate\u00a0in Italy for an appointment prior to departing the United States (for a list\u00a0visit this<strong><a id=\" website \" class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/travel.state.gov\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" name=\" website \" data-focus-mouse=\"false\">\u00a0website<\/a><\/strong>) and\u00a0submit the following documents to the U.S. Consular Officer:<br \/>\n1. proof of U.S. citizenship: passport\/naturalization certificate, or birth certificate evidencing birth in the United States;<br \/>\n2. U.S. Armed Forces personnel must also submit a consent to the marriage from their Commanding officer;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>b) Affidavit\u00a0signed by four witnesses (no family)\u00a0before an\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/it\/chi-siamo\/la-rete-consolare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-focus-mouse=\"false\">Italian Consular Office in the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>OR before an authorized Agency in Italy (Pretura, Mayor, local public registrar, notary), in which the witnesses declare\u00a0that \u201cthere are no impediments to the marriage under the U.S. law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An affidavit (\u201c<strong>Atto Notorio\u201d<\/strong>), sworn to by four witnesses, who must be over 18 and unrelated to either of the two parties or to each other. The sworn witnesses must personally appear, with a valid ID (Passport), before the Italian Consular Officer in the U.S. having jurisdiction over your place of residence.<br \/>\nThe affidavit will state that the witnesses swear under the penalty of perjury that they personally know the U.S. citizen, that they personally know that the U.S. citizen is a resident of the U.S., that they personally know that the U.S. citizen has never been married or is now divorced or widowed, that to the best of their knowledge the U.S. citizen is free to marry in accordance with the local laws, and that there are no objections for the U.S. citizen to be married in Italy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To apply for an Atto Notorio with this Consulate, please send an email with a copy of the following documentation to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/statocivile.houston@esteri.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statocivile.houston@esteri.it<\/a>\u00a0Please be informed that this document\u00a0<strong>is valid for a maximum of\u00a090 days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/conshouston.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Richiesta-atto-notorio.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-focus-mouse=\"false\"><strong>Atto notorio request form<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bride and Groom\u2019s certified copies of birth certificates duly legalized with the Apostille;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Italian translation\u00a0of the above birth certificates;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Photocopies of Bride and Groom\u2019s U.S. passports and driver\u2019s license;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">photocopies of the U.S. passports belonging to the four witnesses;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">photocopies of the birth certificates belonging to the four witnesses;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fees:\u00a0Fees must be paid in US Dollars.
