Ambassador Varricchio celebrates the Italian Republic Day with Assistant Secretary of State Reeker who brought Secretary Pompeo’s greetings (June 2, 2020)

2 June 2020. The Embassy of Italy in Washington celebrated June 2, the Italian Republic Day, with a message delivered via Facebook to Italians and Italian-Americans in the United States, conveyed by Ambassador Armando Varricchio.

The Ambassador’s remarks were followed by the comments of the Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia of the State Department, Philip Reeker who, for the occasion, brought Secretary Pompeo’s greetings.

Ambassador Varricchio recalled the spirit of unity and courage that distinguished Italy’s response to COVID-19, the solidarity and friendship shown by Americans in the darkest moments, and the concrete gestures of support of the many Italian companies and citizens who helped their communities to provide support to those hardest hit by the crisis in the US.

In his message for the Italian Republic Day, Secretary of State Pompeo stated “as close allies and friends, the relationship between the United States and Italy is wide-ranging, with cooperation ranging from trade and defense to educational and cultural exchanges. The United States deeply appreciates Italy’s active leadership in strengthening regional and global security” and commended “the Italian people for their resolve and resilience during this challenging time”.

Assistant Secretary Reeker and the Ambassador noted that Italy and the US, united by shared values and ideals, will harness the opportunities for a recovery driven by new technologies, and build the future of our free and democratic societies by combining rights, well-being and greater equity.

Ambassador Varricchio highlighted that this will also be possible thanks to “the indissoluble ties between our citizens and the many Italian-Americans who contribute to forge a unique bond that is renewed and strengthened on a daily basis”.

The virtual format chosen for celebrating the Italian Republic Day enabled the consular network in the United States to come together under the aegis of the Embassy, and to reach thousands of fellow italians in the US, united by a shared love for Italy.
