Acquisition of Italian citizenship by minors born abroad

In accordance with the current legislation on citizenship, the Consulate General of Italy in Houston informs that the acquisition of Italian citizenship by minors born abroad and residing within this consular district may take place through two distinct procedures, determined by the date of birth of the minor and the legal status of the parents at the time of birth.

General regime

This applies to minors born abroad who do not fall under the transitional provisions and for whom the ordinary procedure for the acquisition of Italian citizenship applies.

This applies to minors already born as of May 24, 2025, for whom the legislation provides a transitional framework, with specific procedures and deadlines for submitting the application.
