How to apply for reacquisition of Italian citizenship by establishing residency in Italy (art. 13 co.1 Law 91/1992)

Italian citizens who lost their Italian citizenship are able to reacquire it in one of the following ways:

  • by submitting a formal written statement of intent to reacquire Italian citizenship and establishing their permanent residency in Italy (Law no. 91/1992, art. 13, letter c);
  • by establishing their permanent residence in Italy for a minimum of one year (law no.91/1992, art. 13, letter d). The statement of intent is not necessary in this case. The re-acquisition comes into effect the day after the one-year residency requirement has been completed.

 INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION

The applicant must send the request for citizenship reacquisition along with the preliminary documentation exclusively via email to the following address:

The subject of the email must contain the following:

REQUEST FOR CITIZENSHIP REACQUISITION art. 13, co 1, lett. c della Legge 91/1992– First Name, Last Name, date and place of birth of the applicant.”

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS 

  • Application form;
  • Copy of a valid passport issued by the country of current citizenship;
  • Proof of residence in this consular jurisdiction (utility bill, driver’s license or State ID);
  • Birth certificate issued, within the last six months, by the Italian Comune where you were born or where your birth is registered;
  • a copy of the applicant’s most recent Italian passport (if available);
  • Certificate of Naturalization, or equivalent documentation according to the local practice of the relevant foreign country (e.g., birth certificate accompanied by citizenship certification) indicating the date and reason of acquisition of foreign citizenship.

An appointment to submit your statement of intent (pursuant to art.13 paragraph 1 lett. c Law 91/1992) will be scheduled ONLY IF the above documentation, submitted first by email, is correct and complete.

If the documentation is found to be incomplete or non-compliant, the application will be rejected and must be resubmitted following the instructions published on the website.

On the day of the scheduled appointment, the applicant must submit the original documents and a second set of copies. In addition, the applicant will need to provide a receipt of payment of EURO 250,00 payable to the Ministero dell’Interno. The payment should be made as follows:

Failure to move to Italy within a year of the statement will render it invalid.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to check the requirements for legal residence in Italy and for registration in the Comune’s Registry by contacting the relevant Italian authorities.
