In order to be valid in Italy, deeds and documents issued by foreign authorities must be legalized by the Italian diplomatic-consular representations abroad, translated in Italian and the translation must be legalized.
Legalization/Apostille of documents
Legalization is a procedure through which the legal qualification of the public official who has signed an act and the authenticity of his signature are officially certified.
Documents issued in the USA are legalized with the Apostille. The Apostille is a certification that will be attached to the document issued by foreign authorities. In USA the Apostille is issued by the Secretary of State where the document has been issued.
Legalization of the translation (or Attestazione della conformità all’originale delle traduzioni)
To request the Legalization of the translation (or Attestazione della conformità all’originale delle traduzioni) it’s necessary:
- To book an appointment on Prenot@ami (https://prenotami.esteri.it/) for service “Legalization/Certification of Documents”.
- At the appointment bring:
- The Formulario-Legalizzazione filled out
- The original documentation (not the Apostille)
- The translations in Italian
- A USPS Money Order for the payment of the Consular Fees. For the fees, check the Tabella Consolare at Row “Traduzione atti non eseguiti in Consolato – In Italiano (per foglio) – art 72A” and Column “USD arrot.” (be aware that the fees change on January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1). The USPS Money Order should be for the total amount calculcated multiplying the number of translations pages for the Consular Fee Art 72A
- A pre-paid and pre-addressed envelope (no FedEx) with tracking number
Be aware that is not possible to send the documentation by postal mail. It is recommended to book an appointment through Prenot@ami to ensure efficient and timely management of the requests.
